Product Features¶
Every trade item in GTIN1 can be enriched with a variety of features: firmware files, documents, recipes, images, videos, and more. These features appear on your product's hosted page, in API responses, and through GS1 Digital Link resolution.
Managing Features¶
All features are managed from the Features tab on your trade item's detail page in the GTIN1 dashboard. From there you can add, edit, and remove any of the feature types described below.
The features system uses a unified interface: select the feature type, fill in the form, and save. Some features (like firmware and manuals) can be shared across multiple trade items, while others (like images and recalls) belong to a single trade item.
Feature Types¶
Images¶
Product images are the most visible feature on your trade item's hosted page. GTIN1 automatically generates optimized variants in multiple formats (AVIF, WebP) and sizes (thumbnails at 300x300, display at 1200x1200) for fast loading across all devices.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Image file | JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, SVG, or BMP |
| Title | Optional image title |
| Description | Optional image description (used for alt text) |
| Priority | Display order (lower numbers appear first) |
| Is primary | Mark one image as the primary/hero image |
Each trade item can have one primary image, which is used as the hero image on the product page and as the thumbnail in listings and search results.
Image ordering
Set the priority field to control the gallery order. The primary image always appears first, followed by remaining images sorted by priority and upload date.
Firmware¶
For connected products and IoT devices, GTIN1 supports firmware version management. Firmware entries can be uploaded as files or linked to external download URLs.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Version | Version string (e.g., "2.1.0") |
| Title | Firmware release title |
| File | Firmware binary file (optional if URL is provided) |
| URL | External download URL (optional if file is provided) |
| Release date | When this version was released |
| Description | Release description (supports HTML) |
| Release notes | Detailed changelog |
| Size (KB) | File size for display |
| SHA-256 checksum | Integrity verification hash |
| Min hardware version | Minimum compatible hardware version |
| Max hardware version | Maximum compatible hardware version |
| Is latest | Whether this is the current recommended version |
| Is stable | Whether this is a stable release |
Firmware entries are shared objects. A single firmware version can be linked to multiple trade items. This is useful when the same firmware applies to an entire product family.
When a consumer scans a product with firmware available, the hosted page displays the latest stable version with a download link.
Documents¶
Upload PDF documents such as user manuals, safety data sheets, specification sheets, or quick-start guides. GTIN1 automatically extracts metadata from uploaded PDFs.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| File | PDF document file |
| Title | Document title (auto-populated from PDF metadata if blank) |
| Description | Document description |
| Page count | Extracted automatically |
| File size | Extracted automatically |
| PDF metadata | Author, subject, creator, and creation date extracted automatically |
Documents appear on the product page with download links, making it easy for consumers to access manuals and reference materials after scanning a product.
YouTube Videos¶
Attach YouTube videos to your trade items for product demos, tutorials, unboxing videos, or marketing content. Videos are embedded directly on the product page.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| YouTube URL | Full YouTube video URL |
| Title | Video title (displayed above the embed) |
| Description | Video description |
| Priority | Display order (lower numbers appear first) |
GTIN1 automatically extracts the video ID from various YouTube URL formats (standard watch URLs, short URLs, and embed URLs) and generates the embed code and thumbnail URL.
Recipes¶
For food and beverage products, recipes show consumers how to use the product. Each recipe includes preparation details and can be linked to multiple trade items.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Title | Recipe name |
| Description | Brief recipe description |
| Ingredients list | One ingredient per line |
| Instructions | Preparation steps |
| Image | Recipe photo |
| Prep time (minutes) | Preparation time |
| Cook time (minutes) | Cooking time |
| Servings | Number of servings |
| Difficulty | Easy, Medium, or Hard |
Recipes are shared objects and can be associated with multiple trade items. For example, a salsa recipe could be linked to both a salsa product and a tortilla chip product.
Ingredients¶
Track the ingredient list for food products with detailed metadata for each ingredient.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | Ingredient name |
| Is major allergen | FDA major allergen flag |
| May contain | "May contain traces" flag |
| Priority | Display order (by predominance) |
| Percentage | Approximate percentage by weight |
| Origin | Country or region of origin |
| Notes | Consumer-facing notes (e.g., "Fair Trade", "Non-GMO") |
Ingredients are displayed on the hosted product page and included in the DPP composition section. Major allergens are highlighted for consumer safety.
Nutrition Facts¶
Display nutrition information for food products.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | Nutrient name (e.g., "Total Fat", "Sodium") |
| Value | Amount with unit (e.g., "12g", "150mg") |
| Daily percent | Percentage of daily value |
Certifications and Claims¶
See the Certifications and Compliance guide for detailed information on managing certifications, claims, and the Digital Product Passport.
Recyclability¶
Track recyclability information for your products, including recyclability codes, recycling instructions, and assessment details. Each trade item can have one recyclability record.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Recyclability code | Classification (e.g., recyclable, partially_recyclable, not_recyclable) |
| Recyclability percentage | Percentage of the product that is recyclable (0-100) |
| Description | General description of recyclability |
| Conditions | Special conditions required for recycling |
| Recycling instructions | Detailed recycling instructions for consumers |
| Recycling instructions URL | Link to external recycling instructions |
| Assessment standard | Methodology used for the recyclability evaluation |
| Assessment date | When the assessment was performed |
| Assessed by | Organization that conducted the assessment |
| Valid until | Assessment expiry date |
| Valid regions | ISO country codes where the assessment applies |
| Recycling stream | The material recycling stream (e.g., Paper/Cardboard, Plastic - PET, Glass, Metal - Aluminum) |
See the Recyclability Assessment Standards guide for details on each available standard and how to choose the right one for your product.
Recalls and Safety¶
See the Product Recalls guide for detailed information on managing recalls and safety notices.
Merchant Links¶
Link to retailers where consumers can purchase the product. Each merchant link connects a trade item to a known merchant with a purchase URL.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Merchant | Select from the merchant registry (Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc.) |
| URL | Direct link to the product listing |
Warranty Links¶
Attach a warranty registration or information URL to a trade item. Each trade item can have one warranty link.
App Links¶
For products that have companion mobile or desktop applications, app links point consumers to the correct app store listing.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Platform | iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux, Amazon, Huawei, Samsung, Web, or Other |
| Name | App display name (e.g., "Sonos S2") |
| URL | App store listing URL |
| Description | Brief description of the app |
| Minimum version | Minimum app version required |
| Is required | Whether the app is required to use the product |
| Priority | Display order |
GTIN1 validates that app store URLs match the selected platform (e.g., an iOS app link must point to apps.apple.com).
Accessories, Parts, and Consumables¶
Link related trade items to each other:
- Accessories - complementary products (e.g., a case for a phone)
- Replacement parts - serviceable components (e.g., a filter for a vacuum)
- Consumables - items depleted through normal use that need regular repurchasing (e.g., ink cartridges for a printer)
Consumable links include additional fields for estimated lifespan (e.g., "~300 pages") and whether the consumable is required for the product to function.
Safety Notices¶
Add safety notices that appear prominently on the product page. Each notice has a severity level:
| Severity | Use Case |
|---|---|
| Info | General safety information |
| Warning | Important safety precautions |
| Danger | Critical safety hazards |
Brand Assets¶
In addition to trade item features, you can manage assets at the brand level:
| Asset Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Logo | Brand logo (used in headers, listings, and product pages) |
| Banner | Brand banner image (used on brand pages) |
| Icon | Brand icon (used for favicons and small displays) |
| Document | Brand-level documents |
Each asset type supports a primary designation. The primary logo, for example, is used as the default brand logo across all product pages.
Shared vs. Owned Features¶
Some features belong exclusively to a single trade item (images, safety notices, recall status, warranty links), while others are shared objects that can be linked to multiple trade items:
| Shared (many-to-many) | Owned (one-to-many or one-to-one) |
|---|---|
| Firmware | Images |
| Manuals | Ingredients |
| Recipes | Nutrition facts |
| YouTube videos | |
| Documents | |
| Safety notices | |
| Recall status | |
| Warranty link |
When you delete a shared feature from a trade item, it is unlinked (not deleted). The feature remains available for other trade items. When you delete an owned feature, it is permanently removed.
